DANNY THE PLOUGHER.

BY. Michael Boyle.

Danny Glynn, Lakeview, Moylough is a mechanic and past pupil of St. Jarlaths Vocational School. He has been an active member of Macra Na Feirme for many years and served as the organisations county chairman. One of his great hobbies has been the restoration of vintage tractors of which he has a number.

His love of vintage tractors led him to become active in the Moylough Ploughing Association, County Ploughing Association and the National Organisation. His big hope is that one day Galway will host the National Ploughing Championships.

We as a class visited the National Ploughing Championships and were delighted to see Danny a Winner. This is a small report on Danny and the Ploughing Championships.

In 1996 Danny Glynn went to Carlow and competed in the National Ploughing Competition under the vintage class. There is a lot of competition in this class. People travelled from all over Ireland to see the vintage tractors ploughing and the modern machinery. There was a lot of interest in the old tractors because most farmers usually get large equipment to do all their work, so it is a change to see small tractors and small ploughs working and see how their fathers ploughed the land in the olden times. The vintage class is split into two, tractors and horses. Then they are split up into different classes, National and Over all.

Danny competed in the National. There is a wide range of tractors used from Ferguson 20, John Deer and the tractor Danny used was a tractor from the International range (Farmer Cub). This tractor is a bright red colour with a one furrow plough. Danny started ploughing at the age of 16.

His father showed him how to plough with the tractor he is using now. According to Danny he is still learning as he goes along. From a very young age Danny was always interested in the art of ploughing. His father and mother encouraged him to plough in all local competitions but they did not think he would be as successful.

Miskell On Song For New Champs

Mountbellew V.S. New Inn

Mountbellew 2-10, New Inn 3-1.

It was a historic win for Mountbellew V.S. in the East Galway Vocational Schools Final at Pairc An Creagain on May 21st. The tournament, for 1st and 2nd Years, was in its first year and Mountbellew, New Inn, Tuam and Glenamaddy took part. Mountbellew and New Inn finished the league stages on top, qualifying them for the final.

On a damp Mountbellew pitch, underdogs New Inn surprisingly started the better and a crowd of about 50 saw Sean Walsh give them the lead with a superb goal. Mountbellew manager Gerry Naughton looked baffled as his side really struggled with the conditions and New Inn grabbed a second goal through Barry Shea, on 15 minutes. Shane Dolan added a point for New Inn leaving M’bellew 7 points adrift. The black and amber side really needed a score and got it through Clonberne man Micheal Miskell. Then disaster struck when full forward Raymond Murray cried off injured. Midfielder Miskell however added another point before Menlough’s Eamon Hansberry got a well taken point. The home side were now finding their form and Micheal Miskell scored a brilliant goal and 2 important points by David Boyle, playing on his home pitch put Mountbellew ahead. HALF-TIME: M’bellew 1-5, New Inn 2-1.,

The second half saw Mountbellew continue to dominate and St. Brendans man Kieran Crehan added another point. Then came the game’s best score with David Boyle scoring a brilliant long range point from a tight angle. Kieran Crehan then grabbed another point before Gurteen man Robbie Donnellan put New Inn 5 points behind. However it wasn’t over yet and Barry Shea pulled a goal back on the break for New Inn. Mountbellew however didn’t panic and Micheal Miskell converted a free, calmly struck out of his hands. Gurteen’s Kerril Lally then spotted the New Inn goalie off his line and brilliantly chipped him to ensure victory.

Scenes of jubilation followed from the Mountbellew team while the New Inn players looked at the ground in dismay. For every player on the winning team, this was their first final since joining the school and it will live long in their memory for many years to come.

Team: Joe Flannery, Kerril Lally(1-0), Micheal Carr, Damien Collevy,Stephen McHugh, Eamon Hansberry(capt. (0-1), Daithi Noone, Micheal Miskell(1-3), Patrick Divilly, John Miskell, David Boyle(0-3), Robbie Donnellan(0-1), Johnny Ward, Raymond Murray(sub.Shane Lyons), Kieran Crehan(0-2).

Subs: Trevor Kelly, Gerard Walsh, Alan McDonagh, Cathal Lyons, Brian Fahy, Eamon McLoughlin. Manager: G.Naughton.

This was a match report compiled and published in the local newspaper, on the day Mountbellew won the East Galway Vocational schools Final.

COUNTY GALWAY

Galway is a county in western Ireland on the Atlantic coast in the historic province of Connaught. The town of Galway is the county seat. The county has a population of around 180,000 and covers 5,945 sq km. Galway is bisected from north to south by Lough Corrib. To the west the mountains of Connemara district reach 730 metres (2,400 ft); silver, lead and copper are mined there, and marble is quarried. To the east, oats, wheat and root crops are grown, and sheep and cattle are raised. Tourism, textile manufacturing, and fishing are also important. Galway has the largest percentage of Gaelic-speakers of any county in Ireland.
Galway city is on the river Corrib at the head of Galway Bay. Galway county borough has a population of 50,900. Iron foundries, fisheries and a black marble quarry form the major industries. University College was founded in 1849. The earliest settlement dates from a fortification, built there in 1124. Anglo-Normans took the city in 1232. The fishing village of Claddagh is across the river, and Salthill a popular resort is nearby. Galway is the departure point for the ferry to the Aran Islands.
