What's this MUSO all about?

MUSO aims to promote quality underground Irish music, by making samples of artists' work available to the wide audience on the World Wide Web. We only distribute audio files when we have been given permission by their copyright holders to do so. Please note that you should not redistribute any audio files that you download from this site - they are for your personal enjoyment only.

Note for new Irish bands:

MUSO wants to hear from new, alternative Irish bands. If we like what you're doing we will give you your own MUSO page and place an MP3 of one of your tracks on the Web (with your permission), so that the world can find out about your sound. There are no strings attached! We aim to keep the standards high, so you don't have to worry about being included amongst a load of old rubbish - listen to the sounds that we've got here already if you don't believe us. Contact muso@mister.ie if you're interested in our offer (no attachments please).

What are MP3s?

MPEG Layer 3 (MP3 for short) is a new audio compression technique. It is a lossy compression system, analogous to the JPEG compression system which is used to compress images: if the compression ratio is set too high then the quality deteriorates, but at lower compression ratios the quality is just fine. MP3 compressors spectrally analyse a digital audio signal and take out the sounds that are lost in the background, while leaving in the sounds that are important.

MUSO uses an optimal MP3 compression ratio. All tracks are sampled in 44kHz stereo, direct from digital sources where possible, using a 112kbps data rate. The sound quality should be as good as CD on the average computer sound system, though it will be slightly inferior to CD on higher quality systems. We have done our best to maximise the sound quality/download size ratio of all our MP3 files for your listening pleasure.

You will need an MP3 player program to listen to these files. We recommend WinAmp, which is a shareware program for Windows. It doesn't nag you or expire, but it's such a great little program that we suggest that you register it - it only costs US$10, which entitles you to all future versions - this will help its developers to keep on producing newer, better versions. You can download WinAmp V1.9 for Windows 95/NT from here (400kb). For a Macintosh version you should go to NullSoft's Web site. For other platforms and for other MP3 products you should visit www.mp3.com.

Our MP3 server can now resume broken downloads!
