4th Class join the Royal National Lifeboats for a Day

When 4th Class got involved in the K'nex Engineering Project they had no idea it would lead to this. It all began with the construction of various rescue vehicles made with K'nex and using motors for winches and platforms. You can see all this work on the K'nex Page. We thought it would be a good idea to see if we could arrange a vist from someone from the RNLI to our classroom. We contacted that RNLI and told them about our project. We were so excited when they actually invited us to visit the lifeboat station in Dun Laoghaire and go on the lifeboats!

It was a beautiful day in March and this day had to be carefully selected so that the lifeboats could be brought to the pier. We were told all about the rescues that the lifeboats do and also about all the training. One of the crew even put on a dry suit and got into to the water to show us how it keeps him dry. We saw all the equipment and learned about safety at sea.

Next we got to go on the lifeboats and even into the engine room on the big one. We tried on all the equipment and sat in the control seats. We went down below to where the people go when they are rescued. We had a fantastic time and it was very exciting to see how everything works. Thanks to everyone at Dun Laoghaire Life boats for all the time they gave us. Thanks also to the parents who helped with the trip.
