Background to this project
1st and 4th Class have been working on an Endangered Animals Project for the past few months. Pollution kept coming up as a major source of danger to animals. The children saw that they had a very real part to play in the fight against litter.
"Dolphins can get the plastic wrapping of beer cans stuck on their noses and then they might stop breathing." "Many fish die from pollution in the water." "Birds die from getting rubbish stuck on them." Niamh Moriarty (4th Class)
Then we heard about the Junior Summit and 4th class started a campaign in the school to create a greater awareness of the huge litter problem facing Dublin. 6th Class decided to get involved as well. This work grew into a whole-school project including work from Junior Infants, 1st Class, 2nd Class, 3rd class and 5th class as well.
This web page is part of our campaign and will also form the basis of our entry to the Junior Summit.
"Littering could be prevented if there were more litter bins and less litter bugs." Katie, Laura and Emma.
Don't Throw Litter on the Street
"These children are throwing rubbish on the street." "The first thing I would do is I would get those children and bring them to the most disgusting place in the city and show them how bad it looks and what a dirty city we have." Ciara Gannon (6th Class)
We would say: "It is not a good idea to litter because you are harming many plants and animals though you may not think it." "A message to all children out there: DON'T LITTER".
"Make people aware about how bad pollution is and maybe put bins in even more places in the streets of Dublin." Claire (6th Class)
Dublin is too Dirty
Ciara D (6th Class)
"Bins shuld be cleaned out everyday because otherwise they overflow and nobody can use them. There should be more recylcing centres throughout cities." Niamh, Una and Aisling (4th Class)
"Put rubbish in the bin." "Put more bins on the street." "Don't be lazy, run to the nearest bin." " Don't eat or drink on the street." Nora Bowles (4th Class)
Our beaches are being ruined by Litter
"This problem could be solved if people but their litter in the bin and there are a lot of bins on the beaches - if people would just put their litter in the bin." Niamh Moriarty. (4th Class)
"People should stop dumping litter into the ocean so the tide wouldn't bring it into the beach." Ronan McCann (6th Class)
Rubbish is Ruining our Rivers
"Rubbish is ending up in our rivers because people are too lazy to find a bin." Phillipa (6th Class)
"People could have thrown their own rubbish in the river or they could have thrown it on the ground and it floated into the river." Laura (4th)
"The litter may have ended up in this river through sewage pipes." " Also people throw things in the river." Stephen Kavanagh (4th)
"Can you see the factory wastepipe?" "The factory makes plastic and unwanted plastic goes into the river." "The rubbish is in the river because the rubbish dump is right beside it and the more rubbish that goes into the dump, the more that goes into the river." Stacie Aston (6th)
