During the War of Independence he remembers bringing food to men on the run in the mountains. He witnessed house burnings and other atrocities and infamies perpetrated by the Black & Tans and at a sheep fair in Ballyvaughan he was searched and prevented from selling his lambs. After the Second World War he saw the changes in fishing methods and the use of bigger boats and the decline of the fish stocks and with it the decline of the old way of life in Gleninagh. Tom was one of the last of the native Irish speakers in his area where the language remained strong up to quite recently.
