This was a project completed by Sixth Class, for the School's Adopt Monuments Project, with the Pegasus Foundation. The monuments on the Heritage tour were adopted by the school children and were studied, researched, drawn and photographed by them. We also made a video, which we are hoping to put online in RealVideo format, and the children constructed a wonderful, large scale replica model of all the heritage sites adopted.

Mr. Scully's idea of a sixth class project of Newcastle in the 17th century, was the perfect example of sixth class working together in the name of the school. With the help of our art teacher, Kay Martin, the project began to form.

The project took about six weeks to put together. It was decided that we should take the project to the E.N.F.O. museum to put it on display. When the project was finished there was a test to see which ten people were going to go to the E.N.F.O. centre to answer questions on the project. The test was on the local history of Newcastle. The ten chosen were Patrice Keegan, Emer Cahill, Bryan Dunphy, Mark Higgins, Kathleen Bohan, Averil Flynn, Emmett Cullen, Julianne Kennelly, Mark Byrne and Elizabeth Dwan.

In November those selected travelled by bus into town to the E.N.F.O. centre. The centre was open to all visitors. The press were also there to see the Lord Mayor make his speech. Other schools were also participating with a project of their choice. The Press were interviewing each school in turn. Five people out of the ten were chosen to have their picture taken by The Irish Times. There was also an article written for the newspaper. It read as follows:

A MONUMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT.

The work of ten schools which adopted a local monument as part of a project to create awareness of local heritage is now on display in E.N.F.O, Dublin. Anne Byrne reports on an inspirational initiative.

Sixth class in St David's Primary school,Artane, Dublin, had adopted the casino in Marino and were obviously proud of their baby. They had spent a lot of time studying the classical building and had measured it diligently to produce a scale model.

A couple of metres away from the casino nestles the Norman village of Newcastle, Co. Dublin. The charcoal grey Glebe house, Old school and churches, are illuminated with tiny lights within. However, most of the villagers are outside enjoying the village fair where goods are being bartered.

Kathleen explains that the Protestant church was built in the 1400's but, when the population fell, the roof was removed from part of the building. Sixth class teacher Eamon Scully and his pupils all co-operated to produce the beautiful model and to stage a drama, make paintings and photograph the village, as well as recording its history.

The outstanding work of these three schools and seven others can be seen in E.N.F.O, 17 Andrew, street, Dublin, this month. Each of the ten schools has adopted a local monument as part of a project to create awareness in the pupils of their local heritage. Organised in Ireland by Dublin Civic Trust, this is part of a larger European project with fifteen other European towns and cities adopting heritage sites in the same way. The project has been entered in many more exhibitions such as Tallaght Library and Heritage Awards. The project proved to be a great success and brought valuable publicity to the school"
