Sporting Matters

Newtown School boasts a wide range of sports facilities including an astro-turf pitch with floodlights, two all-weather playing pitches, two rugby /soccer fields, an outdoor heated swimming pool, two sets of tennis courts, gymnasium, weights room, basketball courts and extensive grounds where many sports are played throughout the year.

Newtown encourages all students to get involved in as many sports as possible. Our primary sports are Rugby and Hockey from September to April and Athletics and Swimming to the end of the Summer term. However we also offer an extensive variety of other sports, such as; badminton, tennis, cricket, soccer, basketball, and aerobics.

Girls are encouraged to participate in hockey at Newtown. Girls of all ages and levels of ability are catered for through our ten hockey teams. The girls play in the Southeast Leagues and Cups, and also play many fixtures against other schools throughout Ireland. There is an annual exchange whereby games are played against Leighton Park and Kineton High School in England.

Newtown girls teams have overall had a very successful season remaining unbeaten at Senior level right up to the Cup final and having a winning record at all levels. This year Newtown have been Cup finalists at Senior level and League finalists at Inter A level as well as reaching play-off and semi-final stages at Junior and Minor levels. Ciara Williams, Sue Ryan, and April Rellis were chosen to represent Southeast at the Inter-Provincials.

Boys hockey is also played at the school. There are six teams for various ages, and they play in both the Munster and Leinster Leagues and Cups.

Newtown has been well represented on both the Munster team for boys and on the Southeast team for girls at U/16 and U/18 level in the Inter-provincial Championships. Each team has two practices a week, and matches are generally on Wednesday afternoons.

Rugby has gained in strength in the last few years and Newtown in now one of the strongest rugby schools in its sector. Unbeaten in the league this year, we have provided ten boys for the Munster 'B' team in the last three years.
Famous past pupils include Nick Popplewell (captain of the Irish International team) and Chris Pim (captain of the Leinster Team).

Newtown offers a comprehensive range of athletic activities to our pupils. Each pupil is a member of a 'Clan'. There are four clans - Yellow, Red, Green, Blue. Pupils compete for their Clan in athletics, swimming, rugby and hockey. All pupils are coached in all disciplines of Track and Field and each undertakes to participate in each discipline throughout the summer term receiving points for different levels of achievement.

Newtown also competes in many Inter-School athletic events at various age levels throughout the summer term and also has a great tradition of both relay and individual successes at County, Munster and All-Ireland levels.

Many relay teams have been victorious at All-Ireland level and many individuals have gone on to represent Ireland at both Schools, Junior and Senior level. During the 1980's Jacqui Stokes achieved success at national level in a range of events such as Long Jump, High Jump, 100m, 200m, 400m and upon completion of her studies at Newtown won a four year athletic and hockey scholarship to Providence College, USA.
