Newtown is a co-educational second level school in Ireland. Students at the school are encouraged to the highest academic achievements as they are offered real subject choice throughout a six year Leaving Certificate programme. Work Experience combined with Career Guidance prepares our students for the ever changing world of tomorrow. On our seventeen acre campus, located in Waterford City, boarding and day students have the advantages of small classes, supervised study time, and extensive facilities to enhance the educational environment.

Academic Subjects

Our classroom facilities serve all subject areas. We offer a choice of Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, with fully equipped labs to support all three of these sciences.
Macs in the Computer Room The machines in this picture, while still usable, are retired! We currently have about forty computers in two computer rooms which are available to students for school work and often for general use, email, etc., and a further twenty to forty in various locations around the school. We have both PC and Macintosh systems, ranging from old Windows 95 and NT4 machines to recent Windows 2000 PCs and from old 68K colour Macs tthrough various models of PowerMac to iMac and G4 systems. Our programme includes access to the Internet, keyboard skills and introduction to wordprocessing, spreadsheets, database etc, leading on to desktop publishing which at present includes a Transition Year Newsletter and the school magazine.

Potter at workArt is taken by all of the junior cycle students in Newtown. We have three Art rooms, each with a specific purpose. A Pottery room with clay wheels and a kiln, a Craft room which offers a variety of skills and a general art room. Social Sciences are popular choices among students at Newtown. History, Geography are studied by the senior students, while Environmental Studies is taken by all students in Transition Year. The F.Y.T.P involves a lot of environmental work on the beaches in the Waterford area.

Our music programme is well equipped with many practice rooms for students to work on their musical talents individually, as well as a large choir and rehearsal room. New developments include the use of computers for composing and printing out music, and the production of a CD by the Chamber Choir.

Newtown offers a fully equipped Home Economics classroom, a Woodworking classroom with all the tools and equipment required to make furniture,

Woodworkas well as several new Language classrooms.

Daily Life
The students have a sitting room, and a common room for spending their spare time together. They have access to TV, music and vending machines. Almost half of the students at Newtown live on campus. Dormitories are divided into Junior Boys, Senior Boys, and Girls. Junior students are in large rooms with five to eight pupils, and the senior students are in smaller dorms to allow them to focus on studies. Boys' accommodation is currently being improved and expanded with a new building to come between the senior boys' dormitory building (Marsh) and the sickbay area (Nest). This follows major improvements in the girls' boarding facilities.

Catering (these facilities have since been renovated)All boarding students are required to attend supervised study five nights a week, and are provided with three meals and two tea breaks a day. Our self-service dining room is available to all students who are staying at school over lunch or staying late for sports

Newtown is equipped with the best sporting facilities in Waterford. We have a new fully flood-lit Astro-turf hockey pitch. This has been a major improvement to our hockey programme. It is used in place of the two gravel hockey pitch which are now primarily used for practices.

RugbyAlso, a brand new full size rugby pitch has just been opened this year. These two introductions have revolutionized the quality of our matches. In combination with original soccer pitch, outdoor tennis courts, a 25 meter heated, indoor swimming pool with exercise room, and a standard gymnasium, they mean that students can participate in almost any sport of their choice. Extensive new changing and showering facilities allow students to take part in physical education and sport throughout the day.

Newtown School is a self contained community which still upholds the Quaker philosophy, to create a stable, caring, and encouraging environment for a student to grow and develop in.
