Outline of Activities Though limited in number, Waterford Earthwatch has been active recently. Most of this activity has been representing the environmental sector at local authority level. Andrew Cox sits on a strategic policy committee with Waterford County Council and the Community Executive Forum whilst Brendan MacCann sits on the Waterford City Development Board. With small numbers on the ground, it has been advisable to join forces with other environmental and community bodies to speak with something of a unified voice. With this end, Waterford Environment Today has been formed to bring together all the environment and community sectoral representatives together. This include representatives from An Taisce, Irish Wildlife Trust, Comeragh Development group, etc. Submissions have been made on a whole range of environmental issues including the Dunmore East area action Plan, the review of the City development plan, loss of wetlands, etc. Some time ago, money was raised in Waterford to plant trees. Phase one was to plant trees in Primary schools and we are now embarking on phase 2 under the guidance of Brian Jacob. This involves planting deciduous trees in St. Angela's, and Newtown Secondary schools. This will allow Earthwatch to get a wider contact with the young pupils in these schools during the planting process. Brendan is currently working with the Environmental Awareness officer of Waterford Corporation on an energy awareness campaign. This received grant aid under the Environmental Partnership awards scheme. |
