Before I start I should tell you I was a bit uncertain about the kind of audience that was going to be here. I had the choice between ramping up the technical index or making a generally accessible talk looking at a lot of human issues, and I think the latter is the right thing to do, since all you techies out there will know what I’m going to say anyway. So hopefully I’ll have something new for all of you, and it’ll be a bit of fun as well.
The situation with something as complex as the internet, which touches the lives of approximately 148 million people every day, is that nothing about its future or its relationship to humans is never going to be more than an educated guess. The question is how educated your guess is, and whether you can back it up with historical precedent. So what we’ll do is have a look at some fairly basic measurable trends and then examine happenings related to the net under a few categories…
Of course I’ll have to give you some basic theory of networking in order to understand this, but that can’t be helped really..
