Alive-O 1 & 2

Notes for Parents

Full colour leaflets are provided with Alive-O 1 & 2 (Junior Infants/P1 & Senior Infants/P2) Initially five per year were supplied to teachers. Subsequently these were replaced by three leaflets per year, the better to fit in with the Terms.

Pupil Book

You will find a Note for Parents in all but the earliest editions of the Pupil Text. These indicate what you might talk to your child about. They may recall a story, a prayer, an activity that they have experienced during the lessons of the week. Ask them about what they remember and invite them to pray with you about what they thought about.

The text of the prayers is on the Pupil's Book and on the Prayer Page here.

Workbooks and Worksheets

Depending on the choice of the teacher, your child may have a Workbook or Worksheets.

The Workbook provides a page for each week. They may be kept in brought home occasionally or regularly. Most of the page used by the child's activity. On each page you will find a note about the lesson of that week and a prayer that you can pray with your child.

As is the case with the Notes for Parents, the Worksheet may burrow itself into a corner of the school-bag waiting for you to find it!

Prayer Services

Depending on local circumstances and preferences, you may be invited to attend a Prayer Service with your child. These provide an opportunity to celebrate the child's learning in the company with their friends and teachers. Resources for Prayer Services and for the Nativity Play are in the Teacher's Books.

Your parish may have copies of the video available or will have details. The Alive-O for Parents video has been available since September 1997. While the parent programme can't answer every need, it addresses some concerns and provides a forum to raise issues of importance.

The Alive-O for Parents package includes video talks for four sessions, leaders guidelines, participants notes and an introductory segment outlining the programme content. The video is intended not to require an expert facilitator, but may be used by groups of parents who gathere together for four sessions.

First Class/P3 and Second Class/P4

The Pupil Book is similar to that described above with respect to the parent aspect. There is choice of Workbook, however. If your child is receiving celebrating First Holy Communion, the Workbook reflects the preparation your child is making with you and with their class.

Senior Classes

"Stop in yellow box" - On each page of the Pupil Text there is an indication of topics for discussion or activities appropriate to your child's age. The list of prayers you might help them to learn are also listed.

Confirmation Programme

A number of parishes in the Archdiocese have piloted the programme for parents of Confirmation children. Details will be sent to your parish as soon as they are available.

Resources for Parents

What Paul VI wrote of the Communications media applies to the Internet.

The Church recognizes that these media, if properly utilized, can be of great service to mankind, since they greatly contribute to people's entertainment and instruction as well as to the spread and support of the Kingdom of God. The Church recognises, too, that people can employ these media contrary to the plan of the Creator and to their own loss.

There are many programmes which can be used by those concerned about what children might access when the ideal of accompanied use is not possible.

Some sites are valuable in their use of the medium and in their encouraging the child to activity away from the computer. Other sites will be listed in time - here are some interesting sites for now;
