Rules of the Road
Removed from the site because it is not up to date!
Some basic information for those of you who may rent a car to get
to your boat:
All of this information comes from the booklet "Rules of the Road" published by the
Department of the Environment and available from any Post Office
In Ireland .....
- We drive on the left (most of the time).
- Distances on signposts are normally in kilometres (but can be in miles).
- Speed limits are in kilometres per hour - kph (and not in miles per hour - mph).
- We use traffic signals called traffic lights which must now be almost universal, however the sequence and interpretation may be somewhat different.
- GREEN means to proceed with caution.
- AMBER means that you should stop IF it is safe to do so and
- RED means STOP.
- These are NOT the official interpretations by the Department of the Environment but will get you by.
- Be aware that not all drivers are Irish. That not all drivers drive the same. That not all drivers obey the law not to mind the "Rules" of the road.
- Be prepared for "Amber Gamblers" and "Red Devils" who basically because of the speed at which they
approach traffic lights create a doppler effect which makes the lights always look green to them.
That is why GREEN indicates to PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
