We were to take part in an EU part funded IT project called "Cyberspace Learning for Kids - CL4K" which was to look into the possible impact of IT on children, schools, parents, community groups and others in the next century. Children of today will form 15.1% of the European population by the 21st. Century and be entering an employment market focused on the Information Society.These children have to be equipped with skills for ways of working that were not available to their parents and skills that will enhance their prospects when they join the workforce of the Information Society.
The CL4K Project aimed to develop an intercultural electronic learning network across Europe for children aged 5-16. The network was to offer on-line facilities and provide an environment within which children could learn together and play together, teachers could develop and deliver learning activities, data bases of information and teaching and learning resources could be accessed and parents could be involved in the process of education and child development.
The project was to involve Children, Teachers and Parents from Ireland, North and South, the UK, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Greece and Germany. The collaboration was to involve 773 teachers, 12,545 children and 2,705 parents across Europe working with other specialists in the field.
The project is not now taking place which is a great pity.
The objectives of the project were;
To develop and implement an on-line educational facility to be accessed by educational institutions, homes, libraries and youth services.
To develop educational learning materials, and offer collaborative learning project based work on the environment, science and technology, health and the rights of children.
To develop and offer language learning courses on the network, primarily aimed at children over 11 years, in Spanish, English, German and French.
To develop an European Intercultural Learning Project involving teachers, children and parents in each of the countries.
To develop and initiate a "Kids Space" where children can have safe social interaction with other children across Europe.
To develop an on-line educational service providing a database of information and learning resources to educational institutions and parents.
To provide a forum for teachers and parents to discuss issues, foster links and exchange ideas and experiences in education. The CL4K Home Web page has a full description of the project.
