The Redeemer Boys' School is in the town of Dundalk, the county town of County Louth, Ireland. Dundalk is in the north east of Ireland just 80 kilometres from both Dublin and Belfast. We are only 10 kilometres from the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
We are near the Cooley Mountains which are famous for one of Ireland's best known stories "The Brown Bull of Cooley". This story tells how Cúchulainn, the famous hero of Ulster, protected the brown bull of Cooley from being stolen by Queen Maeve's soldiers.
We have a Town Hall where the council meet (see the picture), a Tourist Office in an old building that used to be a warehouse (picture), a Library nearby, a big Post Office and the Louth hospital where we go when we are sick. The picture of the sculpture is from the new Partnership Court complex of small shops, offices and workshops.
Dundalk used to be a big industrial town with shoe factories, the largest railway works in Ireland and several breweries. Today most of the shoe factories and the railway works have closed down.
But now we have many factories such as Harris Ireland just across from the school which makes semi conductors for the electronics industry. Other factories are National Pen, which makes promotional pens, Heinz, makers of frozen pizzas, Striebel who make parts for cars, Quantum/Panasonic, computer disk drives, Keytronic, computer keyboards and Fyffes who are one of Europe's biggest importers of fruit, especially bananas. There is a big army barracks here too. Some of our mammies, daddies or families work in these places. Other people work in Conlon Quinn, an electrical shop, Ravensdale Meat factory and Crazy Prices and Dunnes Stores two big supermarkets.
Two
of the old breweries are still working Cambrickville Brewery and the
Great Northern Brewery. They make McArdles Ale, Harp Lager and bottle
and can other drinks for Guinness Ireland.
There is a Regional Technical College in Dundalk which has approximately 2,000 students.
We like to go shopping in Dundalk. We have ToyMaster for toys, Supermacs for chips and burgers, the butchers, clothes shops like Dunnes Stores and Penneys and two shopping centres - Dundalk Shopping Centre and the new Long Walk Shopping Centre.
We have a cinema. It is a big TV. Things you see there are called movies. Some times kids go skating. Skates are boots with wheels. (Anthony Mc G)
