School Activities

During the year we take part in these sporting activities;

Gaelic FootballGaelic Football is one of our national sports. It is something like a cross between rugby and soccer.It is played by two teams of 15 players each. You play gaelic with a ball, about the same size as a soccer ball. You can lift the ball up with your foot or hands. You can pass it with your fist or kick it. You pass and shoot at the goals. The goal posts look like capital H's. You get 3 points for a goal and 1 point if you kick the ball over the bar between the posts.

Meath, Mayo, Kerry, Dublin and Galway are famous teams. The Clans are our local team. We have a Redeemer school gaelic team. Kerry and Mayo played in the All-Ireland Final. Kerry won for the first time in 11 years. They played in Croke Park in Dublin. Croke Park is where the All-Ireland Final is always played. (Supplied by Second Class).

HurlingHurling is our other national game. It is also played with two teams of 15 players. You have a hurley stick and a small leather ball. You score three points by hitting the ball under the bar and one point by hitting the ball over the bar and between the two upright poles. Kilkenny, Tipperary, Cork and Offaly are famous teams. Clare won this years All Ireland Hurling Final.

SoccerSoccer is our favourite sport. Our local team is Dundalk AFC. They play in Oriel Park which is in our parish. The Republic of Ireland soccer team used to train in Oriel Park when they were playing in Ireland. Steve Staunton, who plays for Ireland and Aston Villa used to live in the Redeemer parish. His parents still live here.

We support Man. Utd., Arsenal, Liverpool, Blackburn, Leeds Utd., Aston Villa and other teams in England.

Cyberspace Learning for Kids (CL4K)

We were to take part in a European Union funded project called "Cyberspace Learning for Kids - CL4K" which was to link up via the InterNet, pupils, teachers, parents, community groups etc. in several European countries.

The project was to involve Children, Teachers and Parents from Ireland, North and South, the UK, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Greece and Germany. The collaboration was to involve 773 teachers, 12,545 children and 2,705 parents across Europe working with other specialists in the field.

It was to be an exciting project which will now not get off the ground. We hoped to involve pupils, teachers, parents and community groups in helping to design educational packages which could be used in schools and the home in the next century.
