Swords Cycling Club

Based in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland

Membership one of the highest and probably most diverse in the country. Has a large touring section, as well as a rejuvenated racing section thanks to sponsorship from Joe Mc Nally Joinery. Terry Quinlan as Chairman of the Club has continued to steer the Club towards the new millenium with some positive thinking and active dialogue amongst membership.

Key Tasks

The promotion of cycling as an interesting and pleasurable pastime for one - that's for the touring people and youngsters alike - the racing segment has benefitted from the advice of Reggie Cairns and Peter Morton, two greats of Irish Cycling in years gone by ( ages ago politely ) .....

Club Meetings

A monthly meeting is held at the School on the Brackenstown Road, on the first Monday of every month. This meeting aims to update the members on issues arising at the Committee Meetings, as well as giving members an opportunity to convey ideas, opinions etc. We also have a guest speaker each month, and this can range from technical to touring to anything really ... makes for a very enjoyable meeting I must admit !

Touring Cyclists

Throughout the season, there is a sizeable contingent in the Club that meet at the Lord Mayors pub in Swords, at 10:00am, on both Saturday and Sunday at the weekend. All classes of fitness are catered for in that although all the riders start off together, they will branch off into various groups to facilitate the different fitness levels. Paddy Griffin, prominent Club Member and member of the Board of the Federation of Irish Cyclists, has responsibility for the promotion of Touring and Leisure Cycling in the country. Therefore it can only be reasonable to assume that he will be only too happy to entertain those of you who are even the slightest bit interested in this end of the sport .. Paddy can be contacted at the Federation of Irish Cyclists homepage, as above ….

Race Reports and Info...

Tour of Ulster Race Report -

Martin Maguire, Cian Lynch, John Condon, Phillip Subden and John Lally raced up in the North last weekend. The first day saw Martin in the break, but he was tailed off coming in the road, and joined up with Cian and John Lally who were in the next group on the road. Phillip Subden came in behind another group on the road, having spent much of the stage on the road on his own. Stage won by Nick Salmon, riding very impressively.

Next morning saw the bunch well strung out early in the race. Bad positioning had me out before the top of the 3rd Cat climb. Chasing in vain was the order of the day as Justin McGee hadn't a leg, as he put it himself. How he managed to finish the stage on one leg …. John Lally was still in contention with Martin Maguire at the stage end, and jumped his group to take 9th on the stage, which was won by Ciaran Power. Mel Sutcliffe rode well to take third on the stage.

The following morning saw a smaller field start out for 48 miles. With a couple of Cat 2 climbs to be negotiated, the field still held very much together, despite Phillip crashing 20 miles into the stage. The run in to the finish was fairly explosive, with attacks left, right and centre. Obviously Ciaran Power was familiar with the finish, as he led out Evans and Salmon into the finishing straight, to take the top three placings on the stage in that order.

The t.t was an unmitigated disaster with an R.U.C. officer blocking the road as I accelerated, some 500 metres into the stage. Stage over effectively. Tommy Evans rode a savage test on a fixed gear, to steal the stage and overall, with a time of 9'07".

SAVAGE.
