Venture Scouting 15+
Programme

What is meant by
"Project or Expedition"?

The word expedition is itself an evocative one.  It conjures up visions of Everest and the Himalayas - different cultures and extremes in climate and terrain.  Expeditions, however, do not always need to be large or physically demanding to be successful.  A dictionary definition of the word might be 'A journey or voyage for some definite purpose'.   In short, for a successful expedition there must be a definite purpose and a logical plan to achieve it.  This is the 15+ programme.

The Venture Unit's project or expedition can be based on their interest and skills and the level of experience and equipment within the Unit.  Ideas for the Unit project or expedition can arise in a number of ways.  A television or radio programme might spark off a train of thought.  An article in a newspaper or magazine, or even a web site, might suggest a place to visit or a project to be undertaken.  The Unit may have a specialist skill or interest which they might want to develop further such as hill - walking or canoeing.  In the months prior to the project or expedition, the Unit programme is made up of acquiring the skills and information necessary to make it a success.  This could include completing a basic first aid course, learning to use a map and compass, raising funds for the expedition and for equipment or organising transport and menu planning.  The concept of an annual project or expedition has been chosen not only because of the personal achievement of each member of the Unit but because it has a logical "Educational Loop" which will help the Unit plan, implement and evaluate and hopefully learn something from the experience.  The "Educational Loop" is - DO - REVIEW - LEARN - APPLY.  Many Venture Units already use this process, whether or not they realise it is another thing.  Here are a few suggestions which some Venture Units have achieved using the 15+ Programme - Trip to Kandersteg, Switzerland - Barrow line Canoe Trip - Trip to Snowdonia National Park, Wales.  The Unit has to choose the project or expedition most suited to the interest of its members.  The Unit uses this as a framework for its training programme over a period of months with opportunities for individuals to develop the necessary skills beforehand.  Skills can be practical or interpersonal, i.e. teamwork, problem solving.  To assist Leaders and Ventures in this process the National Team has established support teams in Dublin and Munster, initially, and soon throughout the other Regions.  Each of these support teams can offer advice and help individual Units with their programme and also in contacting other Units or organisations.
