THE PREVENTIVE SYSTEM
The Preventive System (P.S.) describes the Salesian style of living and relating. It is a spirituality rather than a system.
John Bosco called his method of educating the 'preventive system' to distinguish it from what he called the 'repressive system'- Preventive in his sense of the word has much more to do with accompaniment than with prevention.
It is based ...
Firstly, on the image of Jesus as the good Shepherd, seeking out the lost and those gone astray. ( From this, you get John Boso's insistence on the centrality of the person.)
Secondly it is characterised by the REASONABLENESS of one who is always in some sense educating-i.e. drawing the best out of someone by introducing him/her to the friendship of Christ.
Thirdly, it insists that we relate to the other with a LOVING-KINDNESS- a love that John Bosco says must be actually experienced by the other.
