FINGAL WILDLIFE SITES

IN DANGER OR RECENTLY DESTROYED

1

THE BOG OF THE RING

The Bog of the Ring is situated inland of the N1 on the Dublin side of Balrothery, Balbriggan. An Irish Flora by D. A. Webb, Sc.D. in the section on "HOW AND WHERE TO LOOK FOR PLANTS" has the entry "Dublin. Hill of Howth; Killiney; North Bull, Glenasmole; Bog of the Ring; Canals," Unfortunately since 1977 (when this book was published) drainage and work on the Balbriggan By Pass have reduced the importance of this site.

2

THE BALLAST PIT

Situated near the Railway Station in Skerries, this site was part of a stretch of natural habitat stretching across the southern end of the town. This area of natural habitat has now been reduced to a small area of the original reed beds and less than half the original Ballast Pit. It is further threatened by the building of a swimming pool in the remainder of the Ballast Pit.

For further information see the Ballast Pit (Skerries) and Two letters to the Skerries News on this site and the Fingal Swimming Pool Committee who have plans for a swimming pool in the Ballast Pit Fingal Swimming Pool Committee

3

ROGERSTOWN ESTUARY

This stretch of water and marshy land stretching from Daw's Bridge before Blake's Cross on the N1 past Lusk joins the sea between Rush and The Burrows, Portrane. It is/was an important, roost, feeding and wintering ground for birds. It has already been reduced by a landfill site at Ballaly and is further threatened by this dump.

4

THE BROADMEADOWS

At the start of the Malahide Estuary on the seaside of the N1 just north of Swords is an area of water where Mute Swans congregate in numbers. These swans are so used to people that they come out of the water and up to cars to be hand fed. This is also a good site to see duck and waders. This area is threatened by the building of a bridge as part of the Northern Motorway.

5

THE DUNES

The Dunes in Portmarnock are the subject of an ongoing row and court case with their destruction by the construction of a golf course. I don't know the site and only have information from a coast watch conference. I am not sure of the present position on this site.

6

THE HILL OF HOWTH

There is a proposed meeting with some opposition to develop more of The Hill of Howth. I must confess a lack of information about this site and the proposals for it or the present position.

7

SANTRY WOODS

I only know what I have heard from the media

Please send me information on these sights and photos if possible.
