Canon Magner’s Death
On Wednesday Dec.15th 1920 , Canon Magner left the Presbytery at 11.15am to walk and say his prayers for an hour before lunch. His walk took him along the main road towards Ballyhalwick. He stopped and went back. A car broke down on the road and Canon Magner stopped to help. The man driving the car was called Mr. Brady from Skibbereen. Tadhg O’Crowley from the I.R.A stopped to help. Canon Magner and Tadhg O’ Crowley pushed the car. Just then a lorry load of Black and Tans passed and another lorry load passed and went on about 100 metres and then backed back. They were coming from the workhousein Dunmanway. A person called Hart came out of the lorry and asked Tadhg his name and address. The minute that Tadhg said, "O’ Crowley’ Hart shot him. Canon Magner knelt down beside him and said prayers. That annoyed Hart. Hart said ‘Curse the Pope’. Canon Magner said, ‘Never" and Hart shot him. Brady escaped through the fields. Brady spread the news around the town like wild fire. James Nyhan from Ballinacarriga was cycling and saw what happened. James went to the curate’s house. The curates at that time were Fr. Sheehan and Fr. Carmody. Fr. Carmody rushed on his bike to see what had happened. He passed the spot and turned round at Acres Cross. He cycled back again and he saw a dog sulking at the side of the road and he went over to investigate. He saw Canon Magner and Tadhg O’ Crowley lying dead on the road. They shouldered them to the church and said a special Mass. It was at 4.00 that evening that his family found out.
