About Bob Ó Cathail
Bob is based in "Solamar", Ventry Co. Kerry, where he has his studio and where he does most of his work. He lives with his wife Orna and their son Orial. He has had no formal art education, his formative influences deriving from periods spent working as a heraldic artist and as a signwriter. Much of his earlier work involved the study of Celtic art and this still shows in his paintings. In modern art he would rate Picasso as a dominant influence followed by Van Gogh, Matisse, Chagall, Max Beckmann, Tamara de Lempica, Diego Rivera, Michael Kane and others. Bob is a native of Co. Carlow which he left at the age of 19 to work for a period in London and subsequently traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, Afghanistan and India, returning to Dublin for a period to work as an artist, before settling down in Kerry in 1993.
