Pupils of Scoil Bernadette were delighted to participate in the Dublin-based National
Chamber Choir's Torc of Gold opera project for children.
They were one of 6 schools chosen in Cork city lucky enough to enjoy this experience.
We had been busy rehearsing the opera since January and finally on May 12th, the choir
arrived to do a workshop and a performance with us.

The children were the actors and sang the leading roles while the choir sang the
narrative and provided a wonderful sound and atmosphere throughout the drama.
Valerie Scully played the part of Daragh who has to overcome her great fears of
spiders, the dark and heights in an attempt to win the Torc of Gold in the Warrior
Games at the Slógadh Mór. She is helped by her friend Éanna, played by Norah McGrath.
John Martin Murphy gave a stunning performance as the High King Conor. He was ably
assisted by the Maor at the Games, played by Daniel Murray.

The sneaky Sleeveen
alias Mark Hussey tried to lead Daragh off on the wrong path but Daragh rose
above her fears to complete the Warrior Games. While she does not win, she has
"given it a try and reached for the sky". The Warrior Games were won by Breiffne
played by Caitríona Kavanagh.

Ger Whooley drummed up a storm with his narration which linked scenes and songs.
He was assisted in this by the Scoil Ber school choir. The performance proved to
be a memorable one for both those involved and those watching it on the day. Indeed, we are looking forward to the 23rd June when representatives from all 6 schools will come together to stage The Torc of Gold in Cork Opera House as part of the Sense of Cork Festival.
Until the 23rd June then ........
