Nutmeg, one of the spices which gave the Spice Islands their name.
Nutmeg was the specialist crop of the Banda Islands which at one time produced
the world's entire supply of nutmeg , used in cooking and medicine. The
red covering of the nut provides mace, also a flavouring for food, and
the hard kernel of the central nut contains the nutmeg itself.
