Ladies Handball Player of the Year

Maria McCarthy from Edgewood Lawn , representing St.Brigid's GAA Club , has just been awarded the Irish Female Handball Player of  the Year by the Handball Association of Ireland. The award was presented at a ceremony in Croke Park by the Chairperson of the Irish Handball Association.

This was a fitting end to an excellent year for Maria who, as well as winning the Leinster Singles and doubles championship, was also selected to represent Ireland in the World handball championships , held in Dublin last Autumn. In those Championships she was defeated in the Doubles section by the eventual winner of the competition. Maria also won the Women's Junior All-Ireland title in February 2003.

Maria, who lives in Edgewood Lawn, works as an assistant Manager in a Hair & Beauty salon. She is a keen member of St. Brigid's GAA Club where there is a lively gents and ladies handball section as well as a growing interest in the sport from the juvenile members of the Club who are introduced to the sport as a parallel activity to indoor hurling training.

Handball seems to be something of a family affair at St. Brigid's where Maria's father , who introduced her to the sport , also plays , as do former world handball Champion Eoin Kennedy and his father , Eugene .
