The Sega Megadrive or genesis was releases in Japan on the 29th of September 1988 and in the USA on the 1st of September 1989. This is the console that really put Sega on the map. The reason why? Sega produced a console that was far superior to all computer gaming consoles except the Pc-engine and Turbografx-16. To top it off Sega had created a mascot for its console "Sonic The hedgehog" came into the world of gaming in 1991. It was a huge hit. Then in 1992 sonic2 came out. The game was the most sold 16-bit game of all time! There is other great games apart from Sonic, such as Streets of rage 1,2 and 3; Rambo3; Jungle strike; Shinobi…the list goes on. About 1000 games have been made for the Megadrive during its lifespan of 10 years from 1988-1998. Sega redesigned the outer shell and some of the Megadrive's internal electronic circuitry. The console looked more compacted but lacked the mini-jack connection and volume control. Some of the sound circuitry was changed. The sound quality wasn't as good as the Megadrive1. The power supply was also changed. The Megadrive2 came out in the 1989 in the US and Europe. The side connection for the MegaCD was there, but you needed to get the Megacd2. But the Megadrive1 could be connected to the Megacd1 and Megacd2.

This was released in 1997 in the us by "". It had a really sleek and compacted look to it, but it lacked the support for the 32x and MegaCD. All the electronics where compacted down into one or two chips, which where on a circuit board about the size of a match box. The genesis itself was not much bigger than the joy pad, which really made it sellable to Megadrive veterans.
