... a new era
'LSD was the beginning of a new era. I once called it a 'mind craft of the Noosphere' (Teilhard de Chardin's word). Psychedelics are instruments and like most of our artifacts are capable of being used well or ill. Unluckily misuse is at least as likely as good use. However there is plenty of evidence that LSD and other psychedelics can be used well provided one recognizes that we have to make the necessary effort to use them well in any particular setting. Time, effort, and imagination is needed. So far we have been unwilling to make the necessary effort. Too few people have had the necessary imagination to understand the nature of Albert Hofmann's gift to his fellow creatures. Of course this has been the usual fate of great discoveries. Both the telescope and the microscope began their careers as more or less amusing toys. Both of them seemed at first so crude that many astronomers and anatomists doubted wether they could be of any use for science. Both of them had for many years serious limitations. Both of them produced serious distortions which for years disqualified them as scientific instruments... There were all kind of instrument errors which have been gradually corrected over the years...'     (Humphrey Osmond at Swiss Medical Academy conference, 1993)
... Buddhist practice and psychedelics
'For me, Buddhism provided this religious context within I could hold, understand, and build upon the psychedelic sessions we encountered in New Mexico (Strassman 1996). A solid sitting meditation practice helped me stay alert, interested, non-intrusive, and available to respond to volunteers when needed. Buddhism's acknowledgment and acceptance of, but practical approach to, 'denizens' of non-material realms, also helped me deal directly with the meaning and implications of people's encounters with these inhabitants of usually unseen worlds. The themes of death, impermanence, and loss of self-image seen with high doses of DMT also could be held, looked at, and worked on within the Buddhist framework. Finally, the ethical and moral structure of Buddhism, based as it is upon a particularly wide view of reality, was of help in directing people towards where to take what they had learned on their high dose DMT sessions. In terms of combining religious practice and psychedelic drugs in a fruitful way one simple model comes to mind, This is one in which a religious aspirant, with strong moral and intellectual understanding of religious doctrine, practice, and community, lacks a deep experiential realization of the bases of these doctrines and practices. The view provided by a properly prepared, supervised, and followed-up high dose psychedelic experience may provide the validation of the teachings necessary for inspiration to continue the work at hand. The flow of information should be in both directions. That is, the adoption and practice of ethical and moral guidelines from the great religious traditions should be used to enhance the effectiveness and utility of the giving and taking of psychedelics in all circumstances.'    (Rick Strassman in 'Entheogens and the Future of Religion')
