INTRODUCTION
St Tiernan's has always been to the forefront in training students in Information Technology and associated Business Subjects and our Post Leaving Certificate courses have gained an enviable reputation.

In addition to Award certification by FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council), students are prepared to sit examinations set by highly-regarded examining boards such as ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence), Pitman Qualifications and ICM (Institute of Commercial Management (UK).

Students work with up-to-date technology and have achieved outstanding results over the years. Past students have progressed to further study at diploma and degree level, others are employed in areas where the skills acquired on the course are relevant and fully utilised in key financial commercial and IT areas.

Computer facilities at St Tiernan's are upgraded on a regular basis.

Our courses include such modules as Computer Programming, Information & Administration, Computer Applications Software, Computer Architecture & Systems, Communications and Reception Skills, in addition to Web Authoring, Desktop Publishing and The Internet. A module in Work Experience forms an important part of each course.

Computer hardware and software are being continuously upgraded to high standards at St Tiernan's to prepare students for careers in the rapidly developing world of Information Technology. Students have hands-on experience in using the Internet and E-mail

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROGRESSION

All courses are certified by FETAC (Further Training and Awards Council), which was set up in 1999 by the Minister for Education & Science, with the responsibility for making Awards in Further Education and Training.

FETAC has established the Higher Education Link Scheme, which enables students to progress from PLC programmes to Certificate, Diploma and Degree Courses in the Institutes of Technology and now also to some University courses.

In addition to University College, Cork and the National College of Ireland, the following are some of the Institutes of Technology participating in the Higher Education Links Scheme

IT Tallaght, DIT (Dublin Institute of Technology), Carlow IT, Blanchardstown IT, Athlone IT, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology

COSTS INVOLVED

Course tuition is free to students. However, all students are expected to buy the books and materials required for each module and to pay all the relevant examination fees, in advance.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applications may be made by contacting the school. We will send you an Application Form, which should be returned to St Tiernan's as soon as possible. All eligible applicants will be interviewed and advised as to the most suitable course.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Description
This is a full-time course, delivered over one academic year. Students' work is assessed by means of written and oral coursework, practical skills tests and examinations. Work Experience forms an important part of the course.

Aims
The course aims to provide students with a broad range of skills in the Software Development and Applications areas of Information Technology.

Entry Requirements
Normal requirement is Leaving Certificate, with a minimum of 5 passes, or Leaving Certificate Applied.

Mature students without formal qualifications may apply.
