Search For Starch

1. Today we carried out an experiment called Search For Starch.

2. Starch reacts with iodine to produce a blue/black colour. It can be used to test if starch is present in something.

3. Our teacher diluted the iodine and gave us a dropper. She then gave us worksheets and many different items.

We had to predict before we carried out the experiment.

What We Learned

We discovered that starch was present in many foods.

Eventually we worked out that it was only present in
carbohydrates.

We did not find starch in meat, fish, fruit, sugar or salt.

There is also starch in tissue, kitchen paper and
cardboard.

Starch is a carbohydrate.

Green plants make carbohydrates through
photosynthesis.

An experiment to see if there was starch in leaves

We though there should be starch in the leaves of growing
Plants.

We tested them and found the iodine remained brown.
