Hats Off to Our Winners!!
St Patricks Day saw another crop of winners from Togher NS!! All of the children, from 1st Class upwards, made hats in their Arts and Craft classes. There were some amazing specimens! Shamrocks and Tricolours featured highly, of course, but there were also some very original ideas on show. The younger children made lovely badges.
A member of Dunmanway Promotions came into school the day before St Patricks Day to photograph and judge our endeavours.
We had several winners!! Well done to them all.
Enrolment Day
Any parents of a child or children, interesting in enrolling them in any class, are invited to an information meeting Friday 25th of May, at 9.30am.
Arts and Crafts News
The children are still busy with the Fabric and Fibre strand of the Visual Arts Curriculum.
There are many fine examples of their work on display
Weaving : The children did weaving work using the natural environment, and the hills and fields of Togher, as a source of inspiration.
Printing on fabric : the children designed and made their own polystyrene printing blocks, and came up with some very original ideas.
Sculpture : Using Edgar Degas, the French painter and sculptor, as inspiration, the children created some amazing mixed-media sculptures, using clay and fabric.
Easter Crafts
The children have been busy making Egg holders, and many colourful efforts went home last Friday. The children in 5th and 6th Class made wild bird feeders.
Pre-School Children
A play group will be organised for the new Junior Infants, after the Easter Holidays. The pre-school will begin on Friday the 27th of April and will run every Friday until the 15th of June, from 9.30am to 10.50am. We look forward to meeting our new pupils. More details on this later!
Celtic Book Fair
The book fair was a great success! We have some very avid readers here. One very popular book, especially with the boys in the middle class, was How to Hypnotise A Chicken. All chickens beware!!!! The school received 200 euro worth of free books. Thank you so much for supporting this event.
Art Competition for
5th & 6th Class
The AIB are currently organising an Art Competition. There are many stunning creations being entered from 5th & 6th. Good luck to all of you!
Lifetime Lab
On the 19th of April, 5th & 6th classes will visit Lifetime Lab, on a science field trip. It offers a fascinating insight into environmental issues and Corks industrial heritage.
Lifetime Lab runs environmentally themed workshops for primary schools, where the children learn about themes such as water and energy, through an investigatory and experimental approach.
The children get hands on practical activities, encouraging discovery and investigation.
Films In Schools
There is much activity in the drama classes at the moment! Work continues apace on our film for the FIS Project. Next stop the Oscars we said in the last Newsletter, and we were right!
This year we plan to produce a film called The Oscars. The girls acting in the film will be in their fanciest frocks!!, and the boys will be dapper in their bow ties. There are also going to be some interesting costumes, which have been kindly donated. This project will involve children from 2nd to 6th class.
We have some very fine actors and several budding technicians cameramen, soundmen, and directors!!
Our film from last years project, Everyones A Winner was screened at the Irelands Junior Film-maker awards at the recent freshfilmfestival, in Limerick. Only 15 films were chosen out of the many entries. We were delighted! Lets hope were as successful this year!!
Holy Communion
Holy Communion will take place for four of the children in 2nd Class on 20th May. The Presentation Mass will take place on the 1st of April, with the children making their first Confession on the 25th of April.
Seachtain na Gaeilge
Children participated in many events, including singing Irish songs, Irish Dancing, Gaelic football, and acting out short sketches in Irish.
The pupils in 5th & 6th Class participated in a quiz in Irish, which was held over many days.
Well done to everyone who took part.

Chess
We have entered the County Chess Competition again this year. A match is planned against a team from Youghal, which will hopefully take place at the end of April. Best of luck lads!!!
Were still hoping to organise a trip to M.I.C.C., so that the children will have an opportunity to play with chess players in M.I.C.C., but this will be after Easter Hols.
Heritage in Schools
We have some very interesting experts coming into school in the next few months, as part of the Heritage in Schools scheme.
Geology & Geography
On May the 3rd, a geologist and geophysicist, who has a special interest in the Geology of Ireland, will be visiting. His class visits involve highly visual and hands-on learning about the geological history of Ireland, the structure of the earth, and how rocks are formed.
Environmental Education Waterways
On June the 6th, Streamscapes will visit the school. This will involve a field trip to the local stream, where children will identify water invertebrates, plants and birds. The emphasis is to promote an understanding of all life being part of a cycle and how each part of a cycle affects the rest.
Archaeology & Traditional Music
In September we will be visited by Irelands only specialist in the musical instruments of prehistory. His field includes Stone Age flutes, whistles and percussion, Bronze Age horns and bells and the great trumpas of the Middle Iron Age!!! He will not only explain about, and play, the instruments, he will tell stories about them and the people who played them. He will demonstrate how to make simple instruments, and all the children will be encouraged to play a simple tune together during the class.
This one definitely sounds like fun!
Health Promoting School
Organic Garden
Seed planting has begun!!! The younger children have started seeds off in pots, whilst the older children have been planting potatoes.
The team have drawn up a plan for planting between now and the end of the year, which should ensure that all the children get a chance to harvest and sample crops they have planted. RememberDonations of pots/tools etc are greatly appreciated!!
Environmental Awareness
Just after Easter, we will be visited by a representative of ENFO,The Environmental Forum, who will run some workshops on environmental awareness.
For the younger children, she will look at Air or Water. The older children have expressed an interest in Climate Change, so that will be the subject of their workshop.
