Science News
(And TV Stars!!!)
Watch out for a programme called The Mountain on the Den, to see Colleen, Georgina and Wynona perform!!! The girls’ team beat hundreds of others in audition for this new science show. They were chosen to take part in the programme, when they successfully completed an experiment to make a lava lamp. The girls travelled to Co Louth to film the show, which is packed with science, action, logic, strategy and even explosions, and which requires each team to be able to work together. We cannot wait to see it!!! Well done girls.
Meanwhile the children are very busy improving their thinking skills and carrying out some experiments. The Senior classes recently studied moulds and fungi and carried out some interesting experiments with yeast. The children in Ms Daly’s class visited the Senior classroom to see the display of fungi and mould. They seemed to prefer looking at the fish, and some complained of the smell!!
Senior children have also studied fire and heat conduction. It is rumoured they were melting butter using nails and lighted candles!! All in the name of Science!!!
Science & Maths Award
We are delighted to announce that Togher National School has been awarded the 2010 Discover Primary Science and Maths Award. During the year children in every class had to carry out hands on, practical experiments in order to develop a range of skills as well as acquiring scientific knowledge.
Maths had to be integrated into the Science lessons and we managed to do this successfully. We then submitted a file of photographs and written reports as evidence of our work to the Primary Science judging panel. We are very proud to receive this award and we placed the plaque in a very prominent place in our school hall.
Well done to all of the children, they put in a tremendous effort, and all their hard work was rewarded.

Lifetime Lab - U.C.C.
On the 14 June, children in 4, 5 and 6 classes spent the day in Lifetime Lab. This was a great opportunity for children to develop and apply constructive thinking in scientific investigation.
Greenwaves
Several of the children made great contributions to our Greenwaves Signs of Spring project. Thank you for all the photos and information you sent in.
