Because the monks had treasures, some monasteries suffered attacks from their enemies – the Vikings. Monks often lost their lives in these attacks. When attackers where spotted, the bell at the top of the tower was rung. All the valuables were gathered and taken to the safety of the tower. Everyone was safely inside, the ladder was pulled up, and the door shut.


The Book of Kells
Many monasteries became known not only for there life of prayer, but also for the treasures the monks made. The monks made beautiful books. The Books of Kells is a book of the Gospels. It was written by hand and has many beautiful pictures.
