The Vikings

School Activities > History

The Vikings lived in Norway, Sweden and Denmark about 1000 years ago. Life was hard for them. The Vikings travelled all over Europe and outside it too. They travelled in longboats.
FACT: The biggest longboats were 30 metres long and 5 metres wide. They could hold up to 100 men. The boats were made from springy, oak planks. These were nailed to a rib with iron nails or wooden pegs.
Gaps were filled in with pieces of wool, dipped in tar. The hull was painted with tar to keep water from seeping in. The Vikings raided all over Europe. One of the places they invaded was Ireland. The Vikings raided churches and monasteries all along the coastline of Ireland. At first, they returned home with their riches. But soon, they started to stay in the countries they invaded. The Vikings also liked to wear jewellery made from gold, silver and bronze.
