The Iron Sheik - Gone Soft in His Old Age

The Iron SheikMarch 17th, 2004

There is an old saying that goes like this..."If you can’t say something good about someone, then don’t say anything at all". With that being the case... I will keep my thoughts about the Iron Sheik to a minimum.

From the mid 70's until the mid 80's, the Iron Sheik travelled from territory to territory [which wasn’t uncommon in those days] working his anti-American gimmick. His claim to fame is his title victory over Bob Backlund for the WWF world title in 1983. He would later drop that strap to Hulk Hogan [the true killer of the business] and become the tag team partner of Nikolai Volkoff. They would hold the WWF world straps on a couple of different occasions.

I first met him in Ontario Canada in 1999 while working for the Hardcore Wrestling Federation. It was there that I realized that he was, or had become, nothing more than a drug addled shell of himself [actually, his gut ballooned to about triple its normal size, so I guess calling him a "shell" of his former self is a contradiction of terms]. Having said that...what a waste of talent.

Next time...Sweet Scotty looks at the "German Nightmare" Killer Kurt!!

Also, in the coming weeks, I will look at Bull Pain, Tracy Smothers, Andy Douglas, Sabu and the 5 biggest goofballs that I have ever met in wrestling!!!

Keep the Faith!
