Introduction

The West Belfast Economic Forum (WBEF) provides an independent information, monitoring, research and lobbying resource concerned with social and economic justice issues. Working from a community development perspective, we focus on the needs and concerns of marginalised and disadvantaged people including youth, women, the long-term unemployed, disabled people and Travellers.

West Belfast with an overall population of almost 100,000, has experienced generations of discrimination and marginalisation. As a result, the area is characterised by extremely high levels of unemployment, poverty and ill-health. West Belfast has, in addition, suffered disproportionately from the political conflict and militarisation of this society over the past twenty-five years. This combination of economic and social disadvantage, political discrimination, and the suppression of cultural expression and identity has produced complex and deep-rooted conditions of deprivation and alienation in our community.

Paradoxically, perhaps, the people of West Belfast have responded with resilience, dignity and great creativity. There is a strong tradition of self-reliance and self-organisation which will be the foundation stones of social and economic regeneration. Equally important, there is a great wealth of talents, skills and energy and the determination to bring these to bear on new challenges and opportunities arising from the developing peace process. It is only by harnessing the full potential of each and every citizen that the full benefits of reconstruction and reconciliation can be realised. The West Belfast Economic Forum is working with the people of West Belfast to bring about a democratic and equitable society, based on justice and parity of esteem.
