Wexford
quayfront was constructed around 1870. The timber wharf provided rail access to the ships carrying coal, grain and other cargo. Many generations of Wexford people enjoyed walking the timber decking. |

The
structure known locally as the "woodenworks" stretched the
length of the quayfront from the bridge to the old gas works, a distance
of almost 1.5 Km. It was in continuous use until the 1950's. |

With the decline
of the port the "woodenworks" soon fell into disrepair. The
new main drainage scheme for Wexford sounded the death knell for the
timber structure and it was demolished in the early 1990s. |

The
length of the quay was then in-filled to a width of approximately 25
meters, this contains the main intercepter sewer, collecting the outflow
from the town and carrying it to the treatment plant. |

The reclaimed area was then surfaced with an outer concrete area allowing vehicle access for maintenance of the fishing fleet. The original bollards were replaced providing the link with the old quayfront.

A central decked area reminiscent of the old woodenworks provides a pleasant area to stroll. An inner cobbled area forms the bulk of the new extension, this is broken by the planting of trees and seating supplied by Hartecast Ltd.

When the area was reopened in September 2000 the people of Wexford were quick to reclaim what had been their traditional strolling area.

The area is now the focal point for all large outdoor gatherings such as the opening of Wexford Festival Opera.

The addition of a new marina provides safe serviced berthing and Wexford's main shopping area is only a few minutes walk.

The project was officially opened by An Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, T.D. on 30th June 2001.

Interesting
Facts. During construction, 135,000 cubic meters of material was dredged; 300,000 cubic meters of rockfill went into the quays; while 36,500 cubic meters of armour stone was inserted for outer protection. |
